Hiawatha Line diagram map

The Hiawatha Light-Rail Line offered a great opportunity to simplify a route map to it's most basic elements. Within the railcars themselves, a simple map of the line is displayed to help riders orient themselves, and quickly determine how many stops away they are from their destination. This map (or diagram, more accurately) needed to be simple and clear to allow a passenger to quickly find this basic information.

In addition, we wanted to supply more information, such as connecting bus routes at stations, locations of Park & Ride lots, and airports, but these things needed to be lower in heirarchy than the basic station names.

Another piece of information that I worked into the design without cluttering it up, is approximate travel time between stations. This is shown as a number within the line between each station. This allows a rider to not only determine how many stops away their destination is, but approximately how long the trip will take – without having to refer to a complicated timetable.
